Exhibited a light-sound installation for Glow Eindhoven 2019

Interactive light-sound installation at GLOW

Project overview
In January 2019 I joined ‘Team Ignite’ with the aim to develop the interaction design behind the light art installation of Hypar. In this multi-disciplinary team of 18 people, I was part of the interaction team with 3 others. We were responsible for the concept behind Hypar and worked towards a spectacular show during the annual event Glow Eindhoven 2019 in November. By several tests we did with scaled prototypes we could understand how users like to interact with such a big installation (4 x 5,5 x 6 meters). We defined the final concept in which four modules aimed to engage all visitors to swipe/steer energy in the form of light and sound through the installation. Its purpose was to cooperate with the people interacting with the modules on the opposite side. This idea represented a collaboration between the two elements ‘nature’ and ‘technology’. Different shapes of modules were prototyped and finally, four prototypes were built for the event of GLOW. More than 770.000 people were visiting the event and potentially a large group has seen or interacted via the modules, which we designed and constructed.
My contribution
For a great concept to succeed, we had to take into account many different user profiles. I had to work with many different disciplines and coordinate the development of the final design. We developed a clear concept and communicated this to the whole team to get it realized on real scale during an event of 7 full days in autumn November. For the development of the four modules, we designed a mold and vacuumed plastic to create a hollow 3-layered structure with integrated sensor technology.
